This isn’t a separate engagement so much as a bigger piece of work inside one of the two ways I work: a rebuild is often the first project of an embedded engagement, and it’s how most managed websites begin.
What gets protected
- Your URLs. Every existing address is mapped, and pages that move get redirects so visitors and search engines can find their replacements.
- Your search setup. Metadata, structured data, canonical URLs, and the sitemap are reviewed as part of the move. Search visibility is monitored after launch.
- Your content. Existing pages are migrated into a structured system, not retyped and not lost.
What changes
The parts worth changing: page speed, accessibility, the design, and how painful it is to make an update. I rebuild static-first where it fits, so the new site is fast by default, and back every page type with a schema so publishing stops being an engineering ticket.
How the risk comes down
The new site gets built alongside the old one and verified page by page in staging before anything goes live. Cutover happens once the new site is proven and the redirects are tested, not before. If something does go wrong on the day, you have one person to call who knows exactly what changed.
A few good questions.
Will a redesign cost me my search rankings?
A redesign can affect search visibility, even with a careful migration. I map existing URLs, plan redirects for pages that move, and review metadata and structured data before launch. Then we monitor the change. That reduces avoidable risk; it doesn't guarantee unchanged rankings or a fixed recovery time.
Do I have to rewrite all my content?
No. Existing content is migrated into a structured system rather than retyped. A redesign is a good moment to prune pages that no longer earn their place, but that's a decision you make, not a prerequisite.
How is this different from just starting over?
A rebuild starts by identifying useful content, important URLs, and workflows to preserve. The migration plan accounts for what moves or changes while the design, structure, and editing experience are improved.
